Shown below is a sample of an integrated Problem-Based Unit:

The Problem

A primary school is thinking of playing background music in the classroom as students work. What type of music would you suggest? Is there evidence to suggest this helps learning?

Math Science Social Studies

Does "music therapy" work?

Students will look at academic statistics to determine if the use of background music has been successful in trials.

They will then present an argument to promote or discourage the use of music therapy.

How can we test the benefits of "music therapy"?

Students will review an experiment that tests how plants respond to different types of music.

They will then consider whether the results of these experiments can be used to promote or discourage the use of background music.

How has music played a significant role in history?

Students will review the role of music in world history.

Using this information, they will present an argument as to why music is significant, as well as propose how it can best be used to help students.
